🌀 ENS Labs Updates

NameWrapper Live on MainNet

On March 29th, 2023, jefflau.eth published EP3.5 - Activate new .eth Controller & Reverse Registrar; the long-awaited upgrade was executed with 99.99% voter approval.

EP3.5 is now live on mainnet for @ensdomains! I'm thrilled to have authored the bulk of these contracts along with much guidance from @nicksdjohnson. It brings a lot of UX boosts for ENS. We'll be testing the new app internally on mainnet and plan to release it within a week! 🚀

[EP3.5] [Executable] Activate new .eth Controller and Reverse Registrar: [quote="jefflau.eth, post:1, topic:16776"] With the new Name Wrapper, we will add a new .eth controller that allows registering wrapped names directly as well as registering with multiple records and adding a reverse record in 1 transaction. This will reduce the transactions required from 4 to 2 (for adding records + reverse). This will be added as a controller to the NameWrapper, and the NameWrapper will be added as the new controller of the existing .eth Base Registrar.

We will also replace the current reverse registrar with a new reverse registrar which allows the new controller to set the reverse on registration, as well as adds support for the owner of contract to retrospectively claim their reverse node.

Update on Gasless DNSSEC

Gasless DNSSEC is an integration that is currently being developed by the ENS Labs team. This will make it possible for anyone with a DNS name to ENS-enable it by setting DNS TXT records, with no onchain gas fees whatsoever. Currently, the integration is open for review, and more details can be found in the pull request.

However, a critical vulnerability was discovered in an undeployed version of the DNSSEC registrar code. This vulnerability could have allowed anyone to claim or update a DNSSEC name that was owned by another user. Fortunately, the bug was discovered before deployment and before any users were affected.

@Nick.eth recommended the @Ecosystem_Stewards payout a $100,000 bug bounty for a critical vulnerability discovered in an undeployed version of the DNSSEC registrar code. Slobo.eth approved the payout and echoed Nick's gratitude to the submitter and others who are helping to find bugs in the code.

Call for ENS Foundation Director

Brantly Millegan has expressed his desire to resign as a director, and the DAO will appoint a new director following a nomination process and election. The announcement on the forum outlines the process for nominating a new director for the ENS Foundation, a Cayman Islands incorporated foundation that represents the ENS DAO in the real world.

Any person who is 18 years of age or older can nominate themselves to be a director of the ENS Foundation during the nomination window, with no residency or nationality restrictions. To nominate yourself, you must complete a Snapshot proposal with your legal name, Twitter handle, age, and whether you are a U.S citizen or permanent resident or live in the U.S. or one of its territories.

Additionally, you must answer why you should be appointed as a director, how you would handle a request from the SEC for information about the ENS Foundation and/or the $ENS token, and provide any other information you feel is relevant to your nomination.

Once you have completed your nomination proposal, you must copy and paste it into the nominees thread and provide a link to your Snapshot nomination. To be considered for election, you must receive 100,000 votes on Snapshot in support of your nomination.

If you have any questions, please ask in the relevant thread or reach out to @Alisha.eth / @futurealisha on Twitter. It is recommended that you seek independent legal advice before nominating yourself to be a director of the ENS Foundation.

🌱 ENS Grants Highlights

ENS Small Grants

Both the Ecosystem and Public Goods Working Groups have launched another round of ENS Grants; voting is set to commence on April 16th, 2023.

Delegates and DAO-members are encouraged to submit their votes via the ENS Grants site. For more detail on this month's grants round, read the April 2023 Small Grants Discussion on the forum.

Ecosystem Grants

Projects eligible for the Ecosystem small grants rounds are those that build on or improve the ENS Ecosystem. Applicable projects are meaningfully building, creating content, or improving the ENS ecosystem. 7 projects will receive .7 ETH each.

Public Goods Grants

Projects eligible for the Public Goods small grants rounds have a broader scope that benefits the entire Ethereum or Web3 space. Applicable projects should not be ENS-specific but may include ENS functionality. 5 projects will receive 1 ETH each.

ENS Growth Grants

The Public Goods working group stewards are introducing Growth Grants 🪴 – a new retroactive grant opportunity from the Public Goods working group! With this grant, we are proud to award 10k USDC to five projects that have positively impacted the Ethereum or Web3 ecosystems. The primary goal of this grant is to recognize and support established projects that have demonstrated their value and positively impacted the Ethereum or Web3 landscapes.

Gitcoin Grants Beta Round

ENS DAO is sponsoring the upcoming Gitcoin Grants Beta Round utilizing Gitcoin's decentralized grants stack, Allo Protocol.

The grants stack allows teams to deploy on-chain funding rounds in a trustless manner, but it comes with a cost of gas that needs to be paid every time records are updated or posted on the application.

To mitigate this, builders can post a preview of their project as a reply to @Limes' thread to receive feedback and avoid mistakes before deploying on-chain. The ecosystem group may sponsor gas fees for deploying applications, but this is subject to the discretion of the stewards. Builders are advised to use this support judiciously.

Retroactive Grant: CCIP-read implementation on Starknet

In December 2022, Nethermind proposed to build a CCIP implementation for ENS on StarkNet, allowing effortless linking of StarkNet addresses to ENS domains. This will provide infrastructure for generalized CCIP-read for StarkNet, allow integration of StarkNet applications with ENS, and provide a cheap and trustless storage layer for registries.

Since their initial proposal, the Nethermind team have continued to provide updates on the development of the implementation, which can be found on the forum. The ENS DAO Ecosystem Stewards have provided a further retroactive grant of $20,000 USDC for their continued work on the implementation.

ENS Vision recently launched a podcast called 'The Web3 Vision'; the host, Matt Garcia, welcomed Nick.eth as the first guest on the podcast. This follows the announcement of a $2 million raise into ENS Vision, led by 1confirmation.

ENS IRL: New York City and Tokyo

Several members of the ENS Community met simultaneously in different cities across hemispheres. Ecosystem stewards and ENS Labs team members organized and hosted the ENS Happy Hour during NFT NYC at Helen's in New York. Uniswap Mobile Wallet

Uniswap, a popular decentralized finance (DeFi) platform, has launched a mobile wallet that allows users to seamlessly swap tokens on Mainnet, Polygon, Arbitrum, and Optimism. The wallet also allows users to discover top tokens by market cap, price charts, and volume, favorite tokens and wallet addresses, connect to any app on Mainnet or L2s with WalletConnect, see NFT details, and choose between manual or encrypted iCloud backups. The mobile wallet is self-custodial, ensuring that the user's crypto can't be misused by a centralized party, and it is designed to be simple, safe, and easy to use. It supports ENS and sending between ENS names.

The Uniswap mobile wallet is now available for download on the iOS App Store in several countries throughout the world, with additional countries to be launched soon.

Coinbase, a popular cryptocurrency exchange, has announced the launch of free web3 profiles in partnership with ENS domains. Users can create a profile page and share it with friends to discover popular NFT collections, tokens, and more using the Coinbase Wallet app or webpage.

Rover X Integration

Rover X is a multi-wallet portfolio tracking dapp that enables ultra-fast notifications, custom price alerts, and more. They recently announced a streamlined process to bring NFTs to mobile phones using their app. They're currently offering all ENS Holders a 6 month trial who sign up before June 30th.

The app is designed to help users manage their NFT portfolio and stay up-to-date with their investments. The message encourages ENS holders to download RoverX and take advantage of the free trial offer. Download the app and sign in with your ENS to claim the offer.
